Sawt
2019 | Type Design | Intensive Workshop
Offered by: Lara Captan and Kristyan Sarkis
Sawt (in Arabic: صوت) was designed during the Arabic Type Design - Beirut program, an intensive foundational workshop in Arabic type design. Using traditional and digital techniques, we were guided through drawing an individual typeface based on principles that are essential and unique to the Arabic script. Lettering and type design alternated with theoretical and font production sessions to provide us with a comprehensive base for designing high-quality Arabic typefaces. We were accompanied by core instructors: Lara Captan and Kristyan Sarkis. Sawt means "voice" in Arabic, a name I chose in reference to the strong voice and bold presence of my typeface. It is meant to be used in titles, posters, stencils, anything that needs a bold and loud impact. It is inspired by early Kufic. This typeface is a work in progress.
